This is because the splines in the original handle will not match those on the new replacement cartridge. In addition the new handle will be marked 'Samuel Heath 1820' as shown above and not Adams 1999 or W.Adams 1922 as the original handle.

Cartridge Info

Traditionally basin, sink and bidet taps/mixer use 1/2" valves (washer) or cartridges (ceramic disc) and bath taps/mixer use 3/4". However there several manufacturers who use 1/2" valves and cartridge on bath taps and mixers and at least on that we know of who use 3/4" cartridges on basin, sink and bidet taps/mixers.
All cartridges are designated Hot or Cold. Hot is assumed to be on the left as is the accepted norm in the UK, however many supplies (we approximate 15%) are reversed please ensure you give due consideration to this when ordering hot or cold cartridges (if your supplies are reversed order a hot cartridge for your cold etc).
